Finding the real cause of how your engine runs, sounds, and smells

Engine diagnostics is how we find out why your engine is misfiring, stalling, knocking, or losing power, with or without a warning light on the dash. At Alan Cox Premier Auto Care, we help drivers from Old Marietta to the Cobb Corridor who can tell something feels wrong but cannot pin it down.

We have served Marietta since 1983. Our ASE Certified technicians work in a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility, and our team has spent decades on diagnostics and engine overhauls. We find the cause first, and qualifying repairs are backed by our 2 year / 24,000 mile warranty.

When do I need engine diagnostics if there is no warning light?

You need engine diagnostics any time the engine runs, sounds, or smells different, even with no light on. The engine computer only sets a warning light when a reading stays outside its limits long enough. Many problems, like a faint knock, mild hesitation, or slow coolant loss, start well before that happens.

Think of the warning light as a smoke alarm that only goes off once the smoke is thick. If your light is already on, start with our page on check engine light diagnostics. This page covers the problems you can feel, hear, see, and smell.

Expert tip: Before your appointment, jot down when the problem happens. Note whether the engine is cold or warm, your speed, the weather, and whether the AC is on. Intermittent problems are the hardest to find, and those details can save hours of testing.

What can engine diagnostics find behind a rough idle, misfire, or hesitation?

A rough idle, misfire, or hesitation means one or more cylinders is not burning fuel properly. Engine diagnostics traces it to one of four areas: spark (plugs and ignition coils), fuel (injectors and fuel pressure), air (vacuum leaks and airflow sensors), or compression (valves, rings, and head gaskets).

A worn plug, a failing coil, a clogged injector, and a cracked vacuum hose can all feel like the same shake at a red light on Cobb Parkway. Hesitation can also come from a slow-shifting transmission, so we check both before pointing to one. If it turns out to be a shifting issue, our transmission repair page explains what comes next.

Engine diagnostics can tell a harmless tick from a serious knock

A light ticking that speeds up with the engine is often valve train noise, low oil, or a small exhaust leak. A deep knock from the bottom of the engine can mean worn rod bearings, which is serious. A pinging sound under acceleration usually means the fuel is igniting too early.

Start with the oil, because low or old oil can make valve train parts tick. Ticking that fades as the engine warms often points to an exhaust manifold leak. If a deep knock gets louder under load or the oil pressure light flickers, shut the engine off before a repairable engine becomes one that needs replacing.

Expert tip: Record the noise on your phone with the hood up and the engine idling, then again while someone gently raises the engine speed. Noises have a habit of disappearing the day you bring the car in, and a clear recording helps us know where to start listening.

What does the color of exhaust smoke tell you about an engine?

Blue or gray smoke means the engine is burning oil, often from worn piston rings or valve seals. Thick white smoke with a sweet smell means coolant is burning, which can point to a head gasket problem. Black smoke means the engine is running rich, getting more fuel than it can burn.

Thin white vapor on a cool morning is normal condensation. Blue smoke only at startup often points to valve seals, while blue smoke under acceleration points toward rings or, on turbocharged engines, the turbo seals. A compression test and a leak-down test show what is happening inside each cylinder without taking the engine apart.

Overheating, stalling and hard starts each have their own engine causes

Engines overheat from low coolant, leaks, a stuck thermostat, a failing water pump, or a radiator fan that does not turn on. Stalling and hard starts often trace to fuel delivery, a failing sensor such as the crankshaft position sensor, a vacuum leak, or a weak battery or starter.

Overheating is most common in Georgia summer heat and stop-and-go traffic. Never open a hot radiator cap or keep driving an overheating engine, because heat can warp the cylinder head. A slow crank usually points to the battery or starter, which our electrical system repair work covers.

Expert tip: If the temperature gauge starts climbing in traffic, turn the AC off and the heater on full hot. It feels miserable in July, but the heater core pulls heat away from the engine and can buy you time to get safely off the road.

How does engine diagnostics work at a professional shop?

Professional engine diagnostics starts with your description of the problem, then a road test to confirm it. Next comes scan data, which shows live sensor readings, fuel trims, and misfire counts. Finally, technicians run pinpoint tests, such as fuel pressure, electrical, compression, or leak-down tests, to prove the cause before recommending a repair.

Here is a common example: a scan shows cylinder 3 misfiring, so we move that coil to cylinder 2. If the misfire follows the coil, the coil is bad. If it stays, we test the plug, injector, and compression next.

Root cause matters too, since a coil soaked by a leaking valve cover gasket will fail again. At Alan Cox Premier Auto Care, our team has decades of experience in diagnostics and engine overhauls, and shop foreman Justin Young brings more than 20 years of it. Our hybrid repair experience also helps us separate an engine fault from a hybrid system fault.

Engine diagnostics cost in Marietta depends on the testing involved

Engine diagnostics cost depends on how much testing it takes to prove the cause. A problem that shows up every time is usually quicker to pin down than one that comes and goes. We give you a clear estimate before any work starts.

A steady misfire can often be confirmed quickly, while an intermittent stall may need extra road testing to catch it in the act. Paying for diagnosis up front usually costs less than buying parts that do not fix the problem, and financing is available for larger repairs.
